Acrobatics Gala "Peak of Mastery" Showcases the Golden Quality of "Great Theater in Beijing"

Thrilling balance on bouncing bars, masterful bowl stacking, soaring leaps through hoops... At Chaoyang Theater, the performers' boundary-pushing acts repeatedly draw gasps and applause from the audience. Since May this year, China Acrobatic Troupe's "Peak of Mastery – China Acrobatic Troupe's 75th Anniversary Gala" has entered long-term residency at Chaoyang Theater, launching another exploration into integrating time-honored yet ever-fresh acrobatics into the city's cultural life.

From its first gold medal in 1957, to its first "Golden Clown" award in 2004, and then to its 75th gold medal and fourth "Golden Clown" in 2025, China Acrobatic Troupe – the first national-level acrobatic arts troupe established after the founding of New China – carries on its stage the evolutionary history of Eastern acrobatic aesthetics. "Peak of Mastery" selects the most golden, most representative works from the troupe's 75-year history. For example, "Light on the Horizon – Rolling Cups" won the top prize "Crystal Award" at the 12th Festival Mondial du Cirque de Demain in France in 2004. "Sacred Fight – Hoop Diving" won the "Golden Clown" award at the Monte-Carlo International Circus Festival in 2013. The renowned "Pretty Girls – Collective Diabolo" has swept major awards both at home and abroad, winning the "Golden Clown" twice.

Peak of Mastery Acrobatics Showcases Beijing's Golden Legacy

While preserving traditional acrobatic techniques such as rolling cups, hoop diving, diabolo, pole acrobatics, and bicycle acrobatics, these programs incorporate more artistic choreography and rich Chinese elements including ethnic dance and Peking Opera, finding a way to communicate with contemporary audiences for this millennia-old art form. Moreover, the spectacular works once known for their difficulty can now be steadily and sustainably passed down to multiple teams of performers within China Acrobatic Troupe. This tangible legacy of passing the torch from generation to generation is truly moving and gratifying.

From the tour groups often seen holding small flags at Chaoyang Theater, it is not hard to see that "Peak of Mastery," performed twice daily on a regular basis, precisely targets Chinese and international tourists visiting Beijing. Naturally, it shoulders the responsibility of showcasing the splendor of the "Capital of Performing Arts" to more people. Today, residency performances are flourishing across Beijing, but high-level acrobatic shows remain rare. In recent years, China Acrobatic Troupe has resolutely withdrawn from competition in the low-end market and has attempted residency performances in multiple urban spaces. This new endeavor expands the boundaries of the golden cultural calling card of "Great Theater in Beijing."

On another level, the intensive performance schedule rapidly drives the training and growth of successive generations of performers. Whether it is the rigorous honing of skills through long-term stage presence or the ability to handle unexpected situations live, every bit of accumulated experience becomes a valuable asset, building the foundation for a talent pipeline. On this basis, if "Peak of Mastery" can further refine the pacing of transitions between acts, the performers' "sense of conviction," and the finer details of stage presentation, it will be even more worthy of its mission and aspiration: "to let the world see the best of Chinese acrobatics."
